Radio 1224 combines the atmosphere of pirate radio with modern online radio. The station keeps the memory of the 1224 kHz frequency alive and gives lovers of pirate music, Dutch-language music and schlager a place of their own.
Radio 1224 is a Dutch radio station that broadcasts both on medium wave on 1224 kHz and online. The station mainly plays Dutch pirate music and pirate hits, with the occasional excursion into other music styles. At set times there are live broadcasts with DJs, and outside those times a carefully compiled non-stop playlist is on air.
Radio 1224 was founded in 2017 by Teun & RobertJan. Teun is a radio enthusiast from Lunteren. The station's aim is to keep the spirit of pirate radio alive. Radio 1224 combines traditional medium wave broadcasts with modern internet streams, reaching a broad audience.
Pirate music is the music that Dutch pirate stations played for many years: Dutch-language songs and sing-alongs, the levenslied, tearjerkers, folk music, German schlager, polka and instrumentals. Many of these pirate hits hardly ever reached national radio. At Radio 1224 they form the core of the programming, with room for variety as well.
Especially from the sixties and seventies onwards, secret stations broadcast all over the Netherlands, often from barns, attics and farms. These illegal stations played the music listeners wanted to hear, with greetings and requests for the whole neighbourhood. Radio 1224 plays the music of the illegal stations and brings that atmosphere back to the radio.
Many pirate stations broadcast on medium wave (AM). Especially in the evening medium wave carries far, so even a small transmitter can be heard over a large area. That is why Radio 1224 also broadcasts on medium wave, alongside the online stream.
The choice of the 1224 kHz frequency is no coincidence. This frequency has a rich history in Dutch radio. In the nineties it was used by Hitradio 1224, a station that grew out of commercial plans of the Veronica broadcasting organisation.
After several changes the name 1224 eventually disappeared, but the frequency stayed in use until 1998. By breathing new life into this frequency, Radio 1224 honours the past and brings back a nostalgic listening experience.

The DJs' personal approach makes for an interactive and familiar listening experience. Listeners can join in, send requests and become part of the atmosphere that makes Radio 1224 unique.
Radio 1224 keeps developing and wants to continue the tradition of pirate radio in a modern form. With a combination of medium wave broadcasts and online streaming, the station reaches both local and international listeners.
The commitment of volunteers and the interaction with the audience make for a dynamic and lively radio experience. That keeps the rich history of the 1224 kHz frequency alive, while Radio 1224 stays ready for the future.
